6/30/2016 John Gabriel Borkman by Henrik Ibsen
Different Stages closes its 2015-2016 season with this powerful production of Ibsen' John Gabriel Borkman. It is the all too timely tale of a man who was once wealthy, powerful, and revered, but is now disgraced and destitute, after a financial scandal and prison. His estranged and embittered wife plots for their son to restore the family's reputation. But their lives may be shattered once and for all with the unexpected arrival of his wife's twin sister Ella, who has a rather shocking proposal. Their story is a dark one, but (like almost all of Ibsen's work) the play is shot through with the playwright's sly humor and wit. Directed by Norman Blumensaadt (Fallen Angels), Borkman features Ev Lunning (She Loves Me) as the disgraced bank director. The twin sisters, Gunhild and Ella, are played by Jan Phillips (Well) and Katherine Schroeder (Fallen Angels). Borkman's childhood friend and his daughter are played by Garry Peters (All the Way) and Hannah Rutt (Young Shakespeare). Borkman's son and his lady friend are played by Sebastian Garcia (Man for All Seasons) and Circe Strum (The Language Archive). Mrs. Borkman's maid is played by Bethany Harbaugh (Night Must Fall).
